Back to school...again

One of the benefits we offer at Clearbox is a £1,000 training fund for each member of the team to train, re-train or do something that will improve the day job. Our office manager Vicci has just signed up for a new course, but you'll never guess who inspired her to do it...

Remember when you were young and a school term lasted FORVER, but the summer holidays just flew by in a whirlwind of beach days and playing tag in the street with your friends?

Fast forward twenty years and it’s now the total opposite. Children seem to have more holidays than the local travel agent and I spend my time trying to think of new adventures to take my two crazy kids on, to burn off some of that endless energy! Don’t get me wrong, I love getting to spend some quality time with my children and making some special memories together. However, there is definitely a lot to be said for routine. I think children thrive with structure (even though they don’t know it yet!) - plus they miss playing with their wee chums.

This summer lasted particularly long as my daughter eagerly awaited starting Primary School. There was a count down every night before bed, along with a tally chart on her easel of how many days of summer had passed. Endless questions were asked…Was school starting before or after her birthday? Before or after Santa? How many days, hours and minutes until it was time to put her uniform on for the first time? She had been more than ready to start school for a long time as she watched her cousins start in years past, so I really wasn’t worried…until the morning of her first day.

I suddenly realised that in the blink of an eye it seemed my daughter had just grown up and was about to start this brand new chapter of her life, on her own. Mummy and daddy weren’t going to be standing by her side, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. What if someone wasn’t nice to her? What if she needed a hug? What if she needed something and didn’t know who to ask? What if the playground was too big and scary for her? The scenarios were endless.

On that first day I had such a mixed bag of emotions. I was excited, proud, anxious and a whole lorry load of other feelings that I couldn’t begin to put into words. Thankfully for Erin, the only emotion she had was pure excitement, she was leaping into a new and exciting world of learning and could not wait. She skipped in and didn’t look back! (Cue a crying mummy!)

After I got over the rollercoaster of emotions and the ‘what ifs’ dissolved, I realised I was just proud. I have raised a strong, independent girl who just loves to learn. I like to think that she gets it from her mama as I love to learn too. So what did I do? I used my daughter as inspiration and went back to ‘school’ myself.

I had been eyeing up a qualification in human resources for years, but it was never ‘the right time’, but let’s face it, when is there ever a ‘right time’? There will always be a pull in another direction and conflicting priorities to manage but sometimes you need to create the right time, so that’s what I did. With the unwavering support from both my family and Clearbox I took the leap and applied for a CIPD qualification in Human Resource Practices. So only a few weeks after Erin’s first day of school, I went back to ‘school’ myself. On my first day I followed in my daughter’s footsteps, turned any nerves or reservations into excitement and threw myself into it.

So that’s it, using my daughter as my inspiration, I have started my new journey of learning. I am excited to see what this year will bring - who I will meet, the stories I will hear and the lessons I will learn. But most of all I can share my love of going ‘back to school’ with my daughter, and hope in twenty years she will still love learning like I do.
