We’re back at it, or as they say in That Peter Crouch Podcast, we’re #BackStronger.

2019 was another brilliant year for Clearbox and in today’s post, Alex looks back at one of her favourite campaigns of the year. Happy New Year!

In December, we had the pleasure of launching Amazon’s new partnership with Barnardo’s.

As part of an extra special event, Kidmas, created between Amazon and Barnardo’s, Amazon fulfilment centres around the UK held Christmas-themed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) workshops for children in the local area.

Throughout December, children from across the UK attended the special workshops at Amazon’s fulfilment centres in Coventry, Doncaster, Tilbury, Swansea, Dunfermline and Dunstable.

The workshops were run as part of Amazon Future Engineer, which is one of several STEM programmes run by Amazon in the UK.

The aim of these workshops is to inspire, educated and enable 10,000 children to try computer science over the next two years. It is one of many STEM programmes created by Amazon, all of which are endorsed by the British Science Association.

As well as the Christmas-themed STEM workshop where they programmed robots, the children were treated to lots of special surprises including a visit to Santa’s Grotto where they met Santa, a tour of the fulfilment centre and some very lucky children even got to meet Santa’s reindeer.

At the end of their special tour, the children had a Christmas party with some of the team at Amazon and Father Christmas. The children took home their own STEM-themed Christmas presents, which included LEGO sets and activity books.

To accompany the special events, Amazon also donated £30,000 to Barnardo’s to help the charity continue its work with vulnerable children across the UK.

The donation will support Barnardo’s work transforming the lives of vulnerable children, young people and families across the UK.

Last year around 300,000 children, young people, parents and carers were supported by Barnardo’s through more than 1,000 services across the UK, such as young carers, care leavers, foster carers and adoptive parents, training and skills or parenting classes.

Barnardo’s was set up in by Thomas John Barnardo who in 1867 set up a ‘ragged school’ where children could get a free basic education. In 1870, Barnardo opened his first home for boys and by his passing in 1905 the charity had 96 homes caring for more than 8,500 vulnerable children.

Today his legacy lives on. Barnardo’s supports and protects children and young people facing a wide range of issues, from drug misuse to disability, from sexual abuse to domestic violence.

It was a wonderful campaign to work on for me personally and for us as an agency and I hope it brought a little joy to the lives of the children in the programme during the festive season. We’ve been helping Amazon run community programmes in the UK like this one for almost five years now and each year the programme gets bigger and better. Here’s to a great 2020!
