The Next Big Thing…

Christmas is over, the New Year is here and Northern Ireland PR agency Clearbox Communications is back from the break, powered by Quality Street and ready to go. What's going to be big in PR this year? We asked some of the team for their thoughts on what's going to be hot in 2016.

Anna Morris, Managing Director

Brevity will be top of the pops for me this year. We're now in an age where lots of conversations take place in up to 140 characters, so the days of longwinded press releases and media pitches are over.

Pitching with a punch is here to stay and to stand out, communicators will have to make an impact in record time.

The best way to deliver this punchy approach is to develop image and video content to grab the attention of journalists or consumers quickly and effectively. Keep it interesting, fresh and exciting.

'Discovery' is my big theme of 2016. I feel that PR needs to continue to develop the storytelling process so that audiences discover news and experience brands in a natural, unforced way. Successful brands give their audiences an experience, be it reading an article on a website or engaging with content on social to attending an event, it's important to take fans or customers on a journey of discovery.

With more ways than ever before to engage with the public, customers or stakeholders, opportunities to give audiences a memorable experience with your brand will be greater than ever in the next 12 months.

2016 will be the year that portrait video comes back with a bang. Since widescreen TVs and YouTube came into our lives, films have been shot predominately in landscape orientation. I think this is going to start shifting in the coming months as content viewed on Snapchat, Periscope and other portrait-aspect apps explodes.

Just this week, Comedy Central announced the launch of its first scripted series for Snapchat and we can assume it won't be the last major broadcaster to pen content for mobile use…

Landscape will still be the go-to orientation of choice, but I'd have a healthy wager on a growing chunk content being shot in the style of the 'good old days' this year.
