In honour of our latest signing Niamh, this week we’re sharing some insights on the unlikely parallels that exist between working in PR and in the sports sector. Believe it or not, there’s so much more to it than just our shared love of a good pitch…
In elite sport, marginal gains separate champions from the rest. The same principle can apply in public relations: success rarely comes from a single breakthrough moment, but from a series of well-executed decisions, consistent effort, and strategic clarity. In the world of communications, there’s a lot to learn from how top athletes and teams prepare, perform, and adapt.
Planning is for the pros
Elite athletes don’t just show up and compete, they follow meticulous plans tailored to their strengths and the competition. Campaigns are no different. Before pitching stories or launching content we like to gather the team and have a brainstorm on the sofa, together. This helps us define clear objectives. What does success look like? Who is the audience? What is the narrative?
Top athletes don’t rely on one standout performance to become the best – they deliver consistently over time. That’s how we like to work too. One great piece of coverage is valuable, but sustained visibility? That’s how we build credibility and trust.
Be flexible, use performance data
We already know that news cycles evolve quickly, and external factors can reshape a campaign overnight. The same applies in the world of elite sport. Rarely does a game or performance go exactly to plan. Weather changes, opponents surprise you, injuries occur and sometimes you do everything right and it still doesn’t go your way. It’s the ability to pivot, while staying aligned with your core message, that’s critical. Agile teams outperform rigid ones.
That adaptability is strongest when it’s informed by data. Elite teams analyse everything: performance metrics, opponent tactics, recovery times. Good PR is data-driven too. Tracking coverage, audience engagement, client feedback. These insights shouldn’t just be used to report results – they should actively shape and refine your approach in real time.
Teamwork trumps all
While individual brilliance often gets the headlines, success is rarely a solo effort. Even in individual sports, athletes rely on coaches, analysts, and support staff. PR is inherently collaborative too, it’s what we love about it most! For us, clear and open communication across all our clients is a must. From account managers, creatives, editors, media specialists, and critically, client approval – they all play an essential role.
Bouncing back
However, it would be remiss of us not to touch on the reality of setbacks. A negative headline, a missed opportunity, or a campaign that underperforms can feel like a loss. We’ve all been there. But elite athletes don’t dwell, they review, learn, and come back stronger. That same resilience is just as critical in PR.
Ultimately, the field of elite sport can teach us that excellence is rarely accidental. It’s the result of discipline, clarity, adaptability, and our personal favourite – teamwork. You’re only as good as the company you keep and the people around you.
For PR professionals, we believe adopting this mindset can elevate campaigns from good to exceptional – because in both sport and PR, winning isn’t just about talent. It’s about how well you prepare, execute, and are willing to continuously learn and evolve.
At Clearbox, we reckon employing these tactics and maintaining relentless drive is the formula for a winning comms team. Though we should probably leave the knee-sliding to the professionals…
