How to develop a blog content strategy that actually gets read

And re-read...

Most blogs fail for the same reason. They’re treated as an afterthought, are too ad-hoc, and often they’re repurposed content from elsewhere that hasn’t been adapted for the medium. If you want a blog that builds an audience rather than just adding to the noise of every other platform, you need a strategy before you write a single title.

Here’s how we built ours from scratch…

Start with objectives

Before anything else, decide what your blog is actually for. Are you trying to generate leads, build brand awareness, support customer education, or establish thought leadership in your industry? Each goal changes what you write, how often you publish, and how you measure success. A blog chasing leads needs different content than one that’s built to shape how your industry thinks about a problem. Write your objective down in one sentence –  it becomes the filter for every content decision that follows. Maybe you have multiple objectives, and that’s okay too! Use them as the starting points when creating topic clusters (more on this later.)

Understand your audience

As one might guess, generic content gets generic results. A crucial step in blog strategy is building a clear picture of who it is you’re writing for: their role, their problems, the questions they’re already typing into Google, and the language they might use to describe their challenges. The goal isn’t to have a polished marketing persona document – it’s just to have enough clarity that you can predict what a reader actually wants before they even start reading your headline. Call us Bryan Adams – cause everything we do, we do it for you…

Do real keyword research

Keyword research tells you what people are actually searching for, and stops you from writing into a vacuum. Look for terms with genuine search volume and a realistic chance of ranking, not just words that sound important internally. Group keywords by theme rather than treating each as a standalone article – this naturally leads into topic clusters…

Build topic clusters, not isolated posts

A topic cluster is a content pillar covering a broad subject area, supported by several related articles that link back to it. This structure signals topical authority to search engines and gives readers a logical path deeper into your site. Instead of asking “what should I write about next,” ask “what cluster does this piece belong to.”

Match content to search intent

Every search has an intent behind it – be that informational, navigational, commercial, or transactional. A “how to” query wants an explanation; a “best X for Y” query wants a comparison. Writing content that doesn’t match the intent behind a keyword is one of the most common reasons well-researched posts underperform.

Build a content calendar

A calendar turns strategy into output. Map topics against your clusters, assign deadlines, and plan around key dates or campaigns. It also enforces the one variable that matters more than volume: consistency. A predictable publishing rhythm builds reader habits and gives search engines a steady signal that your site is active – far more than sporadic bursts of content ever will.

Distribute deliberately

Publishing isn’t distribution. Share posts through email newsletters, social channels, relevant communities, and outreach to other publications or journalists who cover your space. This is where blogging starts supporting broader PR and thought leadership goals – a well-placed post becomes a citable source, a talking point, or a link that other sites can reference.

Measure what matters

Track metrics tied back to your original objective: organic traffic and rankings for SEO goals, time spent on-page and shares for thought leadership, conversions for lead generation etc. Review performance regularly and let it inform your next round of topics.

Why consistency beats volume

A weekly cadence of well-researched, intent-matched posts will outperform daily content churned out without strategy. Search engines and readers both reward reliability and depth over sheer output. Blogging done well compounds – each post supports your SEO, reinforces your expertise, and gives PR and outreach efforts something worth linking to. Get the strategy right first, and the results follow.

As with most things, blogging is an ongoing learning curve, and the rules of SEO/GEO (read more about those here) are forever changing. With a solid plan, and creative inspiration in tow, you can create an online editorial space for your brand that is relevant, interesting and above all enjoyable to read.
